Tree Types

“Trees have proved remarkably site tolerant and for centuries we have imported tree stock from around the world which have thrived here. The wonderful trees at Kew Gardens and many arboreta around the country bear testament to that. Many of these 'exotic' trees have won the hearts of estate and humbler garden owners alike and many would be surprised to find that they were not 'native'.

However, there is much to be said for re-establishing genuinely active woodlands here as our countryside has been denuded of much of its original woodland cover. Local provenance of the trees planted is an important part of this. Native plants associated with particular habitats have evolved over thousands of years. They are adapted to the local climate, perhaps also to specific soil characteristics and the management associated with specific sites. They bud, flower and set seed at the correct time to ensure their survival and the wildlife dependent on them, e.g. hawthorn brought from the south to the north may bud too early and risk being frosted (having come from a warmer clime). They support populations of wildlife adapted both to the site and to the particular tree and shrub species found there.”
